On June 15, 2021 the commemorative Scientific Forum «RFBR–NSFC: 25 Years of Cooperation» was held at the National University of Science and Technology (MISiS).
In his welcoming address to the forum participants, the Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Academic Yuri Balega drew attention to the complexity in justifying the funding of basic research in comparison to applied research, but it needs to be taken into account in these challenging times that basic research helps to solve the significant problems which our world is facing: climate change, energy supply and the worsening state of the environment.
“The importance of undertaking basic research in times of economic crisis is a pressing issue and we cannot afford to stop investing in research that will lead to innovation and discovery. The competitiveness of our country in today’s economy and in the world market largely depends on advances in the areas of science, technology and engineering. Funding basic research can help us strengthen the economy, make our world cleaner, safer, and help us in the fight against disease. Accordingly, despite the severe budget cuts and sequestration, funding for basic research should a priori be a matter for federal scientific and technical programs, and scientists should participate in the dialogue when the budgets for science are being drawn up, ”said RAS Vice President, Academic Yuri Balega.
