The Russian Academy of Sciences took part in preparing a statement of G20’s Academies of Sciences, Science 20 (S20), and a separate statement in social sciences (SSH20) with recommendations on topical global scientific issues. These recommendations will be forwarded to heads of state and government at the G20 summit.
This initiative was spearheaded by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei as part of Italy’s S20 presidency.
On July 15, 2021, RAS Vice President Yuri Balega participated in the meeting heads of academies of sciences held to discuss the draft documents; in this speech, the RAS Vice President broached questions of the effects the pandemic had on global inequality and demographics, improving healthcare systems, and digital globalization.
The S20 statement on readiness for pandemics and on the role science plays therein considers the experience gains while combating COVID-19 and the previous pandemics as well as issues in prevention and early detection, response measures, and the need for global coordination in countering global challenges.
The social sciences statement, SSH20, broaches issues of global challenges, crises in science and education, preserving cultural heritage, social policies, aligning legislation and economic policies.
