Ryazan hosted the international research and training conference “Russian America: From the Past to the Present and the Future», timed to the 280th anniversary of the Bering–Chirikov expedition and the 270th anniversary of the Herman of Alaska.
The conference’s organizing committee was chaired by the Academic Secretary of the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (DIFS RAS), Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Council for Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation, RAS academic Valery Tishkov.
In his plenary report, academic Tishkov paid particular attention to the importance of preserving historical memory and research conducted during different periods of Russian America, as well as the role of history in the life of society and Russian America as a part of the Russian world.
Four plenary sessions were held during the three-day conference, which included presentations by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Evgeniy Golovko; Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences Professor Andrey Golovnev; Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, PhD in history, Andrej Kibrik, as well as other researchers from Russia and the United States, representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the Russian Geographical Society, the Znanie Society and different public organizations that contribute to the research and popularization of the Russian America heritage.
During the event, an agreement on cooperating to further develop the topic “Heritage of Russian America” was signed between the Ryazan, Tula and Kursk regions.
It should be mentioned that the Bering–Chirikov expedition led to Europe’s discovery of North America from the side of the Pacific Ocean. The same expedition laid the foundation for the development of vast territories of Russian America by Russian merchants and industrialists. Additionally, in the Ryazan region, 2021 was declared the year of Herman of Alaska, the prelate of Russian America and native of Kadom.
