Russian Academy of Sciences joins G20 Academic Summit in Rome

S20 +SSH20 Academic Summit 2021 was held in Rome on October 22–23. It was, in fact, a two-in-one event, combining the G20 Science 2021 Summit on pandemic preparedness and the Social Science and Humanities 2021 Summit focusing on crises.

The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) was represented at the summit by Yu.Yu.Balega, RAS Vice-President and academician, who gave a presentation at the headquarters of Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.

In his address to S20, he outlined the important role of the Russian vaccine in combating the Covid-19 pandemic and presented the RAS proposals on the most pressing issues where international cooperation is needed, including the ageing population as a global demographic and socio-economic problem, social health as a factor in social development (combating alcoholism, drug addiction, tuberculosis and other socially significant diseases), forecasting technological change in the natural environment during the Fourth Industrial Revolution and finding ways to mitigate the environmental risks associated with economic activity in the new environment, examining and addressing income differentials and improving well-being, the impact of the pandemic on economic growth in the G20 countries, and the socio-cultural determinants of economic development and human capacity-building in the context of improving the quality of life of societies.

On the eve of the Academic Summit, Yu.Yu.Balega, RAS Vice-President and academician, met with A.A.Avdeev, Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Vatican, where they agreed to organize a meeting between the Presidents of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and with D.A.Pushkova, Head of the Representative Office of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) in Rome.
