On October 26, 2021, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) hosted a meeting between RAS President Academician Alexander Sergeev and Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, Minister for Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The meeting focused on new areas of cooperation such as hydrogen energy, artificial intelligence and educational opportunities for students.

Preparations are currently under way for a memorandum on scientific cooperation to be signed during the forthcoming visit by Uzbek leaders to the Russian Federation.

Particular attention was focused on scientific continuity and the staffing problem. According to Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, employment is a pressing issue in Uzbekistan and the state is keen to provide jobs. «A number of technology parks have recently been created in the regions. We support young scientists’ ideas, provide funding, and open workshops and laboratories. Today, almost every institute has a technopark», he said.

For his part, Alexander Sergeev underlined that one ongoing cooperation project between the two countries, the Suffa radio telescope, has found a continuation as the first steps have been taken to set up an international Russian-Uzbek laboratory.
