Professor at the Russian Academy of Sciences awarded ICO Galileo Galilei Medal

On October 20, 2021, the Bureau of the International Commission for Optics (ICO) approved the ICO Galileo Galilei Medal 2021 for Prof. Victor Balykin, Head of the Laboratory of Laser Spectroscopy, Institute of Spectroscopy, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), for his outstanding achievements in laser cooling, capture and control of atoms, and control of the mechanical movement of atoms.

Victor Balykin was nominated for the award by Prof. Gerd Leuchs, Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (Germany), and was supported by leading Russian and foreign scientists.

The International Commission for Optics (ICO) was set up in 1947 as a commission affiliated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and associated with the UNESCO International Science Council (ISC). The Russian Academy of Sciences has been a member of the ICO since 2003. The Galileo Galilei Medal was established by the International Commission for Optics in 1994 and this is the fourth award given to a Russian scholar.
