On December 7, 2021, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) hosted a working meeting between RAS President Academician Alexander Sergeev and Davlatsho Gulmakhmadzoda, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Russian Federation.
The Tajik Ambassador thanked the RAS President for the reception and expressed hope that the scientific and technical cooperation would be fruitful. «There is a need to increase cooperation on aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus is mutating rapidly. And our academies of sciences should work together in this field», he stressed.
The meeting discussed priority areas of scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries, including medical research, particularly use of local medicinal plants to produce medicines, as well as the possibility of conducting clinical trials in Tajikistan of a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Institute of Experimental Medicine (St.Petersburg).
The agenda focused in particular on climate change and its impact on agriculture and shrinking water bodies. «It is high time to address adaptation to such changes. This will not be possible without a scientific approach», Davlatsho Gulmakhmadzoda noted.
Finally, the Ambassador said that Tajik President Emomali Rahmon had proposed that the UN declare 2025 the International Year for the Preservation of Glaciers and proclaim an annual World Glacier Day.
